In his work called Moralia (or Morals on the Book of Job), Pope St. Gregory the Great repeatedly teaches that no one is saved without the Sacrament of Baptism.
Pope St. Gregory the Great, Morals on the Book of Job (Moralia), Book 4, #3: “For every man that is not absolved by the water of regeneration, is tied and bound by the guilt of the original bond… And that he who is not washed in the water of salvation, does not lose the punishment of original sin, the Truth plainly declares by Itself in these words: Unless a man is born of water and of the Spirit, he cannot enter into the kingdom of God [John 3:5].”
In the passage below he cites Our Lord’s words in John 3:5 specifically to affirm that no infant whatsoever can be saved without the Sacrament.
Pope St. Gregory the Great, Morals on the Book of Job (Moralia), Book 9, #32: “For there be some that are withdrawn from the present light, before they attain to show forth the good or evil deserts of an active life. And whereas the Sacraments of salvation do not free them from the sin of their birth, at the same time that here they never did aright by their own act; there they are brought to torment. And these have one wound, viz. to be born in corruption, and another, to die in the flesh. But forasmuch as after death there also follows, death eternal, by a secret and righteous judgment ‘wounds are multiplied to them without cause.’ For they even receive everlasting torments, who never sinned by their own will. And hence it is written, Even the infant of a single day is not pure in His sight upon earth. Hence ‘Truth’ says by His own lips, Unless a man is born of water and of the Spirit, he cannot enter into the kingdom of God [John 3:5]. Hence Paul says, We were by nature the children of wrath even as others. [Eph. 2, 3] Therefore, he who adds nothing of his own is bound by the guilt of birth alone, how does such a one stand at the final judgment, from a merely human point of view, except as one 'wounded without cause'? And yet in the strict account of God it is but just that the stock of mortality, like an unfruitful tree, should preserve in the branches that bitterness which it drew from the root. Therefore he says, For He shall break me with a tempest, and multiply my wounds without cause. As if reviewing the woes of mankind he said in plain words; ‘With what sort of visitation does the strict Judge mercilessly slay those, whom the guilt of their own deeds condemns, if He smites for all eternity even those, whom the guilt of deliberate choice does not impeach?’”
Note that Gregory the Great’s work Moralia was not promulgated as an official papal teaching with the full authority of his office. It was, rather, his personal work and commentary that reflected his views on many topics. Some might interpret the second passage cited above to mean that infants who die without baptism are tormented by the fires of Hell. That was a common belief in the West at the time. However, we know from subsequent papal teaching that while infants who die without baptism are barred from Heaven, they are not punished by the fires of Hell. Since they die with original sin only, without having committed actual mortal sin, they go to a part of Hell where there is no fire. Nevertheless, Gregory’s statements manifest his belief (and the faith of the Church) that no one at all is saved without the Sacrament of Baptism based on John 3:5.

A very popular and widely-sold energy drink in Slovakia is called Hell.
An error promoted by certain representatives of the Vatican II Sect concerns the meaning of anathema. Vatican II Sect member Jimmy Akin made a number of false claims on this matter, including his assertion that anathema does not mean damned by God. Being under an anathema does not mean that a person cannot possibly repent and convert, but a person who is anathematized is condemned by God and will be ultimately damned unless he or she converts. Indeed, here’s an interesting quote from Pope Stephen III who correctly teaches that anathema means that a person will be damned by God (unless he or she repents).
Pope Stephen III, To Charles and Carloman (Codex Epistolaris Carolinus 45), AD c. 769: “If anyone, contrary to our wishes, presumes to act against this our solemn and earnest exhortation, may he know that by the authority of my master the blessed Peter prince of the apostles he is bound with the bond of an anathema, excluded from the kingdom of God, and consigned to eternal fire together with the devil and his cruel pomps and all the impious.”
Akin also made the false claim that anathema only refers to a ceremonial excommunication pronounced by a bishop, not an automatic penalty or condemnation that strikes those who deny dogmatic teaching. But that’s also wrong. His claim is refuted by Pope Stephen III’s statement above, which clearly refers to an automatic penalty. Fr. Willem Hessels van Est (1542-1613), Annotationes In Praecipua Ac Difficiliora Sacrae Scripturae Loca (On Acts 17), 1699, p. 598: “To the unknown god (Acts 17:23)… Here it might be asked, Why then would they not have implicit faith if they worshipped as the true God a god unknown to them? Response: Firstly, because the worship of the true God cannot coexist with the worship of idols. Next, because explicit faith in the one true God is required of all. Thirdly, because it is incompatible even with implicit faith if something is believed that is contrary to it, as it was to place this Unknown God on the same footing with the gods of the pagans, that is, with false gods and therefore demons. For unless He is acknowledged as the one and only God, He is not truly acknowledged…”
This is an interesting and important passage. Fr. Willem Hessels van Est (who is sometimes called Estius) was a noted Dutch scholastic theologian and Scripture scholar who died in 1613. Van Est correctly teaches that the pagans in Acts 17 were not worshipping the true God. He explains that the worship of the true God cannot coexist with the worship of false gods or idols. Since the pagans in Acts 17 were simultaneously worshipping idols, they did not have faith and thus God could not be the actual object of their worship. This is one of many interesting passages that are cited in our video that refutes a certain Novus Ordo heretic: Lies, Contradictions & Errors Exposed. In that video we also pointed out that in this passage Hessels van Est uses the Latin word cultus clearly to include the internal act of worship. That fact serves to refute another lie and utterly fallacious argument made by the aforementioned Novus Ordo heretic.
“Fr.” James Altman rejected Antipope Francis’ claim to the Papacy and says that Leo XIV works for Satan. Yet, oddly he still professes allegiance to the Vatican II Sect. He also remains completely deceived by John Paul II. He not only calls John Paul II a “saint”, but he thinks that he was a great person who was warning people about the apostasy! This is another example of what we covered in our video: “Fr.” James Altman Deceived By John Paul II’s False Mysticism.
The spiritual deception of our day is vast. God has allowed the Devil to raise up a wide array of false teachers who present some truth but false conclusions in order to keep conservative-minded people away from the true conclusions, the true teachers, and the pure faith. Those true conclusions are covered in our material. Altman is one of those deceivers. Taylor Marshall (who also recently called John Paul II a “saint” twice) is another one of those deceivers. In March of 2025, Altman (who purports to be a traditionalist) concelebrated a Novus Ordo “Mass” with “Bishop” Strickland (another one of the aforementioned deceivers) at Mary, Mother of the Light Church in Tequesta, Florida.
“Fr.” James Altman, Feb. 26, 2025, responding to Lifesite’s assertion that Francis and Leo XIV might be antipopes: “John-Henry, I'm of the opinion that it will fall on deaf ears because most of the Cardinals are anti-Cardinals!! Most all of them are anti-Catholic and they are serving up for us the anti-Christ. Pope St. John Paul II told us it's happening in our lifetime.”
St. Jerome, Letter 69, To Oceanus: “Let me now fulfil the promise I made a little while ago and with all the skill of a rhetorician sing the praises of water and of baptism. In the beginning the earth was without form and void, there was no dazzling sun or pale moon, there were no glittering stars. There was nothing but matter inorganic and invisible, and even this was lost in abysmal depths and shrouded in a distorting gloom. The Spirit of God above moved, as a charioteer, over the face of the waters [Gen. 1:2] and produced from them the infant world, a type of the Christian child that is drawn from the laver of baptism. A firmament is constructed between heaven and earth, and to this is allotted the name heaven — in the Hebrew Shamayim or 'what comes out of the waters' — and the waters which are above the heavens are parted from the others to the praise of God. Mike Huckabee is a Protestant who is infected with heretical and Zionist views. Like many other heretics, he wrongly thinks that the modern Jewish State is biblical Israel. Colossians Refutes “Eternal Security” & “Faith Alone”
Colossians is addressed “to the sanctified and faithful brothers” (Colossians 1:2) who have been “delivered from the power of darkness and translated into the Kingdom of the Son” (1:12-13). Colossians 2:11-12 describes them as “having been buried with him in baptism, in which you were also raised with him through the faith”. Obviously, therefore, it’s addressed to justified Christians. Yet, in Colossians 1:23 St. Paul teaches that their salvation is not guaranteed. It’s conditioned upon their perseverance in the faith.
Colossians 1:21-23- “And you, who once were alienated and hostile in mind, doing evil deeds, he has now reconciled in his body of flesh by his death, in order to present you holy and blameless and above reproach before him, if indeed you continue in the faith, stable and steadfast, not shifting from the hope of the gospel that you heard…”
If St. Paul were teaching “eternal security” or “once saved always saved”, he would not teach (as he does above) that justified Christians might not attain salvation. In Colossians 3 he also warns them that grave sins bring the wrath of God. But upon whom or what will the wrath of God fall for such sins? Certainly he means that the wrath of God will come upon the believers if they commit such sins. This further indicates that their salvation can be lost for such acts, which contradicts both “faith alone” and “once saved always saved”.
Colossians 3:5-6- “Put to death therefore what is earthly in you: sexual immorality, impurity, passion, evil desire, and covetousness, which is idolatry. On account of these the wrath of God is coming.”

In his Letter To Augustine (dated AD 404), St. Jerome makes some powerful statements about St. Peter’s primacy at the Council of Jerusalem in Acts 15. He says that Peter stood up and the multitude kept silence (as is recorded in Acts 15). He says that James and all the elders gave consent to Peter’s position. He says that Peter was the prime mover in issuing the decree, and that he was of such great authority that Paul went up to see Peter to have his own preaching confirmed. He also says Peter was the “author” of the rule laid down in Acts 15.
St. Jerome, Letter To Augustine (Letter 75 in Collections Of Augustine's Letters), AD 404, On Peter Presiding At The Council of Jerusalem: “Peter rose up, with his wonted readiness, and said, Men and brethren, you know how that a good while ago God made choice among us, that the Gentiles by my mouth should hear the word of the gospel, and believe. And God, which knows the hearts, bare them witness, giving them the Holy Ghost, even as He did unto us; and put no difference between us and them, purifying their hearts by faith. Now therefore why do you tempt God, to put a yoke upon the neck of the disciples, which neither our fathers nor we were able to bear? But we believe that, through the grace of the Lord Jesus Christ, we shall be saved, even as they. Then all the multitude kept silence; and to his opinion the Apostle James, and all the elders together, gave consent.
These quotations should not be tedious to the reader, but useful both to him and to me, as proving that, even before the Apostle Paul, Peter had come to know that the law was not to be in force after the gospel was given; nay more, that Peter was the prime mover in issuing the decree by which this was affirmed. Moreover, Peter was of so great authority, that Paul has recorded in his epistle: Then, after three years, I went up to Jerusalem to see Peter, and abode with him fifteen days. In the following context, again, he adds: Then, fourteen years after, I went up again to Jerusalem with Barnabas, and took Titus with me also. And I went up by revelation, and communicated unto them that gospel which I preach among the Gentiles; proving that he had not had confidence in his preaching of the gospel if he had not been confirmed by the consent of Peter and those who were with him… No one can doubt, therefore, that the Apostle Peter was himself the author of that rule with deviation from which he is charged.”
Francis & Leo XIV’s “Welcoming” vs. 2 Thess. 3
Among their many other heresies, Antipopes Francis and Leo XIV have taught that there should be “openness” and “welcoming” to people who deny Catholic teaching and violate Catholic morals. Their message is directly opposed to the teaching of 2 Thessalonians 3, among many other things.
2 Thessalonians 3:6- “Now we command you, brothers, in the name of our Lord Jesus Christ, that you keep away from any brother who is walking in idleness and not in accord with the tradition that you received from us.”
2 Thessalonians 3:14- “If anyone does not obey what we say in this letter, take note of that person, and have nothing to do with him, that he may be ashamed.”

They Don’t Understand “Invincible Ignorance”
But the concept of "invincible ignorance" did exist pre Florence the post vatican 2 church is actually closer to saint augustine and thomas Aquinas.

You really don’t understand the issue. The concept of “invincible” or “inculpable” ignorance was acknowledged by saints such as St. Thomas, but they did not teach that people who were thus ignorant of Christ could be saved. For them it only meant that such people would not be condemned for the sin of infidelity or unbelief, but that they would be condemned for their other sins. They held (as the Church teaches) that no one at all can be saved without faith in Jesus Christ, even if they’ve never heard of Him. So no, the Vatican II Sect’s position is NOT traditional or compatible with the teaching of Augustine, Aquinas and (most significantly) the dogmatic statements of the Church. As St. Thomas said here:
St. Thomas Aquinas, Summa Theologiae, Pt. II-II, Q. 10, A. 1: “If, however, we take it [unbelief] by way of pure negation, as we find it in those who have heard nothing about the faith, it bears the character, not of sin, but of punishment, because such ignorance of divine things is a result of the sin of our first parent. However, infidels of this kind [i.e. those who lack the faith through ignorance rather than contrariety] are in fact damned on account of other sins, which cannot be remitted without faith, but they are not damned on account of the sin of infidelity. Hence Our Lord said (John 15:22): ‘If I had not come, and spoken to them, they would not have sin’; which Augustine expounds (Tract. lxxxix in Joan.) as ‘referring to the sin whereby they believed not in Christ.’”
In Mark 6 we read that Jesus went to His hometown and He was unable to perform mighty works there.
Mark 6:5-6- “And he could do no mighty work there, except that he laid his hands on a few sick people and healed them. And he marveled because of their unbelief.”
The passage connects the lack of miracles performed by the Lord in that place with the lack of belief among the people. This doesn’t mean that Jesus was absolutely incapable of performing miracles there, but that it was unfitting and incompatible with God’s will to grant such miracles to people who were unbelieving and of such bad will.
St. Thomas Aquinas, Summa Theologiae, Pt. 3, Q. 43, A. 2, Reply to Obj. 1: “When it is said that He could not do any miracles there, it is not to be understood that He could not do them absolutely, but that it was not fitting for Him to do them: for it was unfitting for Him to work miracles among unbelievers. Wherefore is it is said farther on: And He marveled at their unbelief.”
Antoine Augustin Calmet, French Benedictine Scripture Scholar, Commentarius literalis in omnes libros Veteris et Novi Testamenti, Vol. 7, p. 309 (Commentary on Mark 6:5), AD 1756: “… truly He did not want to [work miracles there], since the ungrateful and faithless citizens had placed an obstacle to His mercy. He willed to grant no benefits to the unappreciative, and to show no indications of His wondrous power to those who neglected Him. Mark 6 teaches us that when faith and good will are absent, God typically will not grant miracles. This explains why many public miracles were performed in the ages of faith and why such public miracles have mostly been withdrawn the final days, when almost the entire world lacks faith and good will (Luke 18:8).

On Feb. 2, 2026, Davide Pagliarani, the leader of the Lefebvrist Society of St. Pius X, announced that the SSPX plans to consecrate new bishops for their group on July 1. Remember, the SSPX claims to recognize the authority of the Vatican II antipopes, including Leo XIV. They even have the audacity to denounce sedevacantists who correctly point out that Leo XIV has no authority. According to canon 1382 of the 1983 Code of Canon Law (promulgated by Antipope John Paul II, whom the SSPX also claims to recognize): “A bishop who consecrates someone a bishop and the person who receives such a consecration from a bishop without a pontifical mandate incur an automatic (latae sententiae) excommunication reserved to the Apostolic See.”
Hence, the SSPX not only has no authorization to consecrate new bishops, but the one who consecrates and the one consecrated will both be automatically excommunicated by the Vatican II Sect. Nevertheless, the SSPX has announced its intention to consecrate the bishops anyway because they didn’t like Leo XIV’s recent response to their demands. Their official communiqué stated: “After much prayerful reflection, and having received a letter from the Holy See in recent days that in no way responds to our requests, Father Pagliarani, supported by the unanimous opinion of his Council, believes that the objective state of grave necessity in which souls find themselves requires such a decision.”
So, if their “pope” doesn’t give them what they want, they will just take it or do it anyway. This proves once again (what we’ve pointed out many times in the past) that at this time the positions of the SSPX are obstinately schismatic, inconsistent, insincere, and absurd. The SSPX is, sadly, a sect. They claim to recognize the hierarchy of the Vatican II “Church”, yet they have remained obstinately independent of their “Catholic hierarchy” for approximately 50 years. They lie to the public by solemnly professing that Leo XIV is the pope while they act as if he has no authority and treat him as if he’s nothing more than a mascot. The truth, of course, is that Leo XIV is a notorious heretic and an antipope who has no authority, but the SSPX won’t take that true position because they would lose a large number of their supporters and benefactors. The priests and leaders of the SSPX, as well as their obstinate supporters, are phonies who lie to God, including during the canon of the Mass.
The SSPX also takes the ridiculously inconsistent position that canonizations were binding throughout Church history, but ceased to be binding after Vatican II (even though the solemn formula that was used before Vatican II is also used by the Vatican II antipopes)! Few explanations of the current crisis are more absurd. Despite the inconsistency and absurdity of their positions at this time, the SSPX continues to gain many supporters and ordain many priests because the vast majority of “traditionalists” don’t care about the faith. They only care about externals, community, status, etc. They don’t care about God’s word. The fact that the SSPX has so many priests and followers is not a good fruit because they lack the faith and do not display obedience to God’s word. Since they reject God’s word and take false positions, their large numbers are in fact a deception. There are many Eastern “Orthodox” sects and other non-Catholic entities that ordain many priests, have many followers, etc. Their ordinations and followers are not good fruits since they deny the faith and disobey God’s word.
1 Samuel 15:22-23- “And Samuel said: Doth the Lord desire holocausts and victims, and not rather that the voice of the Lord should be obeyed? For obedience is better than sacrifices: and to hearken rather than to offer the fat of rams. For rebellion is like the sin of witchcraft, and stubbornness is like idolatry... Because therefore thou hast rejected the word of the Lord, the Lord hath also rejected thee…”
As we’ve documented many times, the SSPX also teaches the blatant heresy that souls can be saved in non-Christian religions. That position is directly contrary to many definitive pronouncements of the popes, as well as the teaching of Scripture and all the doctors of the Church. It’s a clear heresy, yet the stubborn supporters of the SSPX don’t care because they don’t have the faith. They only care about externals, and thus they cannot know or please God. Calvinists believe in Limited Atonement. That’s the idea that Christ did not shed His blood for all men but only for the elect. A number of verses contradict this heresy. 1 John 2:2 is a good example.
1 John 2:2: “He is the propitiation for our sins, and not for ours only but also for the sins of the whole world (ὅλου τοῦ κόσμου).”
St. John teaches that Christ died not just for “our sins” (meaning the sins of the faithful), but also for the sins of the whole world. This is clear enough. However, this passage becomes even more potent in refuting Calvinism when you consider how St. John uses the word κόσμος (meaning “world”) in his epistle. St. John repeatedly uses the word κόσμος (“world”) to describe unbelievers and the world that is outside of God or hostile to Him. Here are four examples to demonstrate the point.
1 John 3:1: “See what kind of love the Father has given to us, that we should be called children of God; and so we are. The reason why the world does not know us (ὁ κόσμος οὐ γινώσκει ἡμᾶς) is that it did not know him.”
In 1 John 3:1 “the world” refers to those who do not believe or know God.
1 John 3:13: “Do not be surprised, brothers, that the world (ὁ κόσμος) hates you.”
In 1 John 3:13 “the world” refers to those who are anti-Christian.
1 John 4:4: “Little children, you are from God and have overcome them, for he who is in you is greater than he who is in the world (μείζων ἐστὶν ὁ ἐν ὑμῖν ἢ ὁ ἐν τῷ κόσμῳ).”
In 1 John 4:4 “the world” refers to people who are not “from God”, which means that they have not been born again and entered the Church.
1 John 5:19: “We know that we are from God, and the whole world lies in the power of the evil one (ὁ κόσμος ὅλος ἐν τῷ πονηρῷ κεῖται).”
In 1 John 5:19 “the world” refers to those who are under the power of the Devil and not in the Kingdom of God on earth.
Hence, when St. John says in 1 John 2:2 that Christ is the propitiation not only for our sins, but for the sins of “the whole world”, that obviously includes people who will never believe and are not among the elect. To claim otherwise is absurd. Calvinism is clearly contrary to the teaching of the Bible. However, the Catholic position is true and biblical.
Pope Paul III, Council of Trent, Decree on Justification, Sess. 6, Chap. 3: “But although Christ died for all, yet not all receive the benefit of His death, but those only to whom the merit of His Passion is communicated.”
On Jan. 25, 2026, Antipope Leo XIV held another mortally sinful ecumenical prayer event. It was an ecumenical vespers service in the Basilica of St. Paul Outside the Walls. It included Anglicans, various Protestants, and Eastern “Orthodox”. Our video Vatican II Is A New Religion shows that to participate in such a joint prayer service with notorious heretics and the representatives of non-Catholic sects has always been forbidden by Catholic teaching. Of course, we hope for the conversion of people who belong to those sects. However, such activity is mortally sinful and a manifestation of heresy. It’s worth noting that the Anglicans involved accept female “priests”, contraception, divorce and “remarriage”, same-sex “unions”, and more.
If his joint prayer service weren’t bad enough, during the event Antipope Leo XIV gave a homily in which he perverted St. Paul’s teaching in Ephesians 4. He applied the teaching about the unity of the Church of Christ to the heretics and the schismatics. He proclaimed that they share the same faith. He also stated: “We are one! We already are!”

Eph 4:4-6). Dear brothers and sisters, how can these inspired words not touch us deeply? How can our hearts not burn within us when we hear them?
Yes, ‘we share the same faith in the one and only God, the Father of all people; we confess together the one Lord and true Son of God, Jesus Christ, and the one Holy Spirit, who inspires us and impels us towards full unity and the common witness to the Gospel’ (Apostolic Letter In Unitate Fidei, 23 November 2025, 12). This of course is manifestly heretical. Protestants, Eastern “Orthodox” and others who dissent from the Papacy or any Catholic dogma have no faith. They are also alien to the Church of Christ, and we don’t hold communion with them. For more on this matter, see the quotes below and this video/article.
Pope Leo XIII, Satis Cognitum (# 9), June 29, 1896: “But he who dissents in one point of divinely revealed truth absolutely rejects all faith, since he thereby refuses to honor God as the supreme truth and the formal motive of faith.”
Pope Eugene IV, Council of Florence, Bull Cantate Domino, 1441: “It [the Holy Roman Church] condemns, rejects and anathematizes all who think opposed and contrary things, and declares them to be aliens from the Body of Christ, which is the Church.”
Pope Pius XI, Mortalium Animos (# 11), Jan. 6, 1928: “Furthermore, in this one Church of Christ no man can be or remain who does not accept, recognize and obey the authority and supremacy of Peter and his legitimate successors.”
Pope Leo XIII, Satis Cognitum (# 9), June 29, 1896: “The practice of the Church has always been the same, and that with the consenting judgment [i.e. consensus] of the holy fathers who certainly were accustomed to hold as having no part of Catholic communion and as banished from the Church whoever had departed in even the least way from the doctrine proposed by the authentic Magisterium.”
Leo XIV is a manifestly heretical antipope. Those who ignore all of these facts and continue to regard him as the pope will be condemned. In his homily, Leo XIV also referred to his recent “Apostolic Letter” In Unitate Fidei (dated to Nov. 23, 2025). We show that his document In Unitate Fidei teaches the same heresy that he manifested in his ecumenical vespers service. That heresy is the Vatican II position that Protestants, “Orthodox” and others who reject Catholic teaching belong to the true Church of Christ – a false position condemned by the Catholic Church.

Just want to share a few quotes with you from a book I'm reading. A priest wrote this in 1871, and it's amazing how he harbored no delusions about what was already going on in his day. He describes the activity of the devil from a historical perspective.

Its object is to destroy from top to bottom, the edifice of Christianity, and to reconstruct on its ruins the social order of Paganism.’ Paganism is the public reign of the evil spirits substituted for that of God.”

Psalm 106 contains some very sad verses about how the people mingled with the heathens and became like them. As a consequence they sacrificed their own sons and daughters and polluted the land with their blood. This is analogous to the sin of abortion in our day. It often occurs because people fornicate and act like the pagans around them. They then shed the blood of their own sons and daughters and pollute the land, similar to those described in Psalm 106.
Psalm 106:35-40- “… they mixed with the heathens and learned to do as they did. They served their idols, which became a snare to them. They sacrificed their sons and their daughters to the demons; they poured out innocent blood, the blood of their sons and daughters, whom they sacrificed to the idols of Canaan, and the land was polluted with blood. Thus they became unclean by their acts, and played the whore in their deeds. And the Lord was exceedingly angry with his people: and he abhorred his inheritance.”
This is one of the quotes that’s included in our recent video (Sam Shamoun: Ecumenical Fake Christian Exposed). It further contradicts those people who think that it’s not really a big deal for Protestants and the Eastern “Orthodox” to deny the Papacy.

In charity, your incorrect understanding of Donatism has led you to conflate distinct issues. Donatism was the false belief that wicked or unholy ministers could not validly perform sacraments. That’s false. It’s not the traditional teaching of the Catholic Church because a wicked person or someone outside the Church can validly perform a sacrament (e.g. baptism) if he observes the requisite matter, form, etc. Donatists also held that the Church only consisted of the morally pure. That’s also false because not every grave sin (but only schism, heresy or apostasy) severs a man from the Church.
Pope Pius XII, Mystici Corporis Christi (#23), June 29, 1943: “For not every offense, although it may be a grave evil, is such as by its very own nature to sever a man from the Body of the Church, as does schism or heresy or apostasy.”
So, the Catholic Church rejects the position of the Donatists that unholy people cannot perform sacraments or be part of the Church. But the Catholic Church teaches that if someone denies the faith (and is a heretic) he automatically loses membership in the Church and therefore cannot rule it. The position that heretics automatically lose membership and authority in the Church is not only found in authoritative papal teaching but was articulated by the very doctors of the Church who condemned Donatism. So, our position is Catholic and has nothing to do with Donatism.
Pope St. Celestine, To The Clergy And People Of Constantinople: “Nevertheless, lest the sentence of him who had already called down a divine sentence upon himself should appear to have force even for a time, the authority of Our Apostolic See has openly ordained that no bishop, cleric, or Christian of any profession, who were deposed from their position or from communion by Nestorius and those of his ilk from the time [ex quo] they began to preach heresy, is to be seen as either deposed or excommunicated. But all these have been and until now remain in Our communion, because he who stumbled in preaching such things was not able to depose or remove anyone.”
