In our previous post, we quoted St. Robert Bellarmine who explained how the Protestant definition of justifying faith as “trust” in God’s mercy is distinct from the Catholic definition of faith. An example of how the Bible contradicts the Protestant definition of faith as “trust” is found in Hebrews 11:7.
St. Robert Bellarmine, De Justificatione, Book 1, Chap. V: “By faith Noe, fearing, prepared the Ark (Heb. 11:7). In whom the act of faith cannot be trust, because trust does not beget fear but expels it. Therefore the act of faith in Noe was to believe with certainty that there would be a flood; for from that act of believing a fear arose which was the reason the Ark was built.”
St. Robert Bellarmine points out that one of the key differences between Catholics and Protestants in regard to the identity of justifying faith is that Protestants believe that justifying faith is a special trust in God’s mercy while Catholics believe it’s an assent to those things revealed by God on the authority of God the revealer. As a consequence, Protestants confuse faith with hope.
St. Robert Bellarmine, De Iustificatione, Book 1, Chap. 4: “Therefore [in regard to what justifying faith is] Catholics differ from heretics in three matters. First, in the object of justifying faith, which heretics restrict to the promise alone of special mercy, while Catholics hold that it extends as widely as the word of God extends; nay they [Catholics] contend that a certain promise of special mercy pertains not so much to faith as to presumption. Next [they differ] on the faculty or power of the soul which is the seat of faith. For heretics locate faith in the will when they define it to be trust, and thereby confuse it with hope. For trust is nothing other than a strengthened hope, as St. Thomas teaches in Summa Theologiae, II-II, q. 129, art. 6. But Catholics teach that faith has its seat in the intellect. Finally, [they differ] in the very act of the intellect. For the heretics define faith in terms of knowledge, but we in terms of assent. For we assent to God, although He proposes things to us to believe which we do not understand.”

In one of our recent videos called, Novus Ordo “Thomists” Fall Into The Pit Defending Islam’s False God, we showed that the true meaning of John 4:22 (where Jesus tells the Samaritan woman, “you worship what you do not know”) is that the Samaritans did not worship the true God but a false god. As St. Thomas said about John 4:22, “you do not adore God because you do not know Him”. Worship of a false god is described as worship of what one “does not know”. Well, the point we made in our video (against the defenders of Vatican II) is further powerfully confirmed by Deuteronomy 13, where God repeatedly describes false gods as those whom Israel did not know.
Deuteronomy 13:2: “… if he says, ‘Let us go after other gods,’ which you have not known, ‘and let us serve them,’ you shall not listen to the words of that prophet or that dreamer of dreams.”
Deuteronomy 13:6-8: “If your brother, the son of your mother, or your son or your daughter or the wife you embrace or your friend who is as your own soul entices you secretly, saying, ‘Let us go and serve other gods,’ which neither you nor your fathers have known, some of the gods of the peoples who are around you, whether near you or far off from you, from the one end of the earth to the other, you shall not yield to him or listen to him, nor shall your eye pity him, nor shall you spare him, nor shall you conceal him.”
Deuteronomy 13:13: “… certain worthless fellows have gone out among you and have drawn away the inhabitants of their city, saying, ‘Let us go and serve other gods,’ which you have not known…”
This sheds light on the reason Our Lord (in John 4:22) described the Samaritans’ false worship as worship of “what you do not know” (i.e. it was the worship of a false god).
Proverbs 1:25-30- “… because you have ignored all my counsel and would have none of my reproof, I also will laugh at your calamity; I will mock when terror strikes you, when terror strikes you like a storm and your calamity comes like a whirlwind, when distress and anguish come upon you. Then they will call upon me, but I will not answer; they will seek me diligently but will not find me. Because they hated knowledge and did not choose the fear of the Lord, would have none of my counsel and despised all my reproof…”

In his commentary on John 8:24, St. Thomas again expresses his position (which is the teaching of the Church) that faith in Christ is required for salvation. Like other saints and doctors, he correctly teaches that people cannot be freed from original sin without faith in Christ. (The act of faith through which original sin is removed is the Sacrament of Baptism.) Thus, to be excluded from salvation it’s not necessary for people to reject Christ. Rather, regardless of whether they’ve heard of Jesus, people remain in original sin and are excluded from salvation unless they come to faith in Him (through baptism, etc.).
St. Thomas Aquinas, Commentary On The Gospel of John (8:24): “‘I told you that you would die in your sins, for unless you believe that I am he you will die in your sins.’ Then, in order not to entirely exclude all hope for their salvation, he proposes the remedy, saying, ‘For if you do not believe that I am, you will die in your sin.’ He is saying in effect: You were born in original sin, from which you cannot be absolved except by my faith: because, if you do not believe that I am, you will die in your sin.”
This explanation, that people remain in original sin without faith in Christ, is also rooted in the words of John 3:36. St. Robert Bellarmine has a good passage about this, as we covered in this video/article: How Is One Saved “By The Name Of Jesus Christ”? (Acts 4:12).

Concerning which it was stated by the Apostle to the Ephesians, chapter 2: For we were also by nature children of wrath…”
Some people are familiar with Anthony Cekada, an independent sedevacantist priest who died in 2020. Although he said some true things, he was sadly a heretic and a John 3:5 mocker who also aggressively promoted the sinful birth control practice of NFP. He believed that people can be saved without even faith in Jesus Christ (a blatant heresy that’s condemned by many popes). In fact, when he was still alive someone we knew called him up and asked him if he believed that Jews can be saved without the Catholic faith. Cekada responded by indicating that if a Jew is a thief then no, but yes if otherwise. He simply didn’t have the Catholic faith or even truly believe in the Gospel, just like many other independent and illicit clergy who have no authority to function as priests. Cekada misrepresented Catholic teaching about theologians in reference to the Magisterium. Yet, even though the Council of Florence’s definition, the teaching of a prime theologian of the Council, and another pope shortly after the Council all teach that no one can be saved in Islam, members of the Vatican II Sect and countless false traditionalists (including the heretical SSPX, SSPV, CMRI, etc.) hold that Muslims (and other non-Christians) can be saved without the Catholic faith. It shows that they have no fidelity to Catholic teaching whatsoever and that they are not Catholics. (This is not even to mention the many other definitive papal statements which teach that the Catholic faith and faith in Jesus Christ are required for salvation).

In Revelation 20:15 and Revelation 21:27 we are informed that only those who are written in the Book of Life will be saved.
Revelation 20:15- “And if anyone’s name was not found written in the book of life, he was thrown into the lake of fire.”
Revelation 21:27- “But nothing unclean will ever enter it, nor anyone who does what is detestable or false, but only those who are written in the Lamb’s book of life.”
Yet in Exodus 32:33, following the Golden Calf incident, God tells Moses that (grave) sins exclude people from the Book of Life.
Exodus 32:31-33- “So Moses returned to the Lord and said, ‘Alas, this people has sinned a great sin. They have made for themselves gods of gold. But now, if you will forgive their sin—but if not, please blot me out of your book that you have written.’ But the Lord said to Moses, ‘Whoever has sinned against me, I will blot out of my book.’”
This is another clear biblical proof against the heresy of “eternal security” (or once saved always saved) and faith alone. It demonstrates that not just one’s beliefs but one’s actions and obedience determine whether he or she will be saved.
Moses was a type of Jesus in many ways. Exodus 32:9-13 is another example. God wanted to destroy the people, but Moses interceded for them to prevent their destruction.
Exodus 32:9-13- “And the Lord said to Moses, “I have seen this people, and behold, it is a stiff-necked people. ‘Now therefore let me alone, that my wrath may burn hot against them and I may destroy them, in order that I may make a great nation of you.’ But Moses implored the Lord his God and said, ‘O Lord, why does your wrath burn hot against your people, whom you have brought out of the land of Egypt with great power and with a mighty hand? It is truly alarming to think that people listen to these so called spiritual influencers and think that they are experts in theology and matters of the Faith. But the nonsense and vile heretical gibberish he speaks is perfectly consistent and supported by the Vatican II counter church, whose theology of universal salvation dissolves Christ and the necessity of being inside the Church to be saved. It is ad hoc theology, whatever argument serves the purpose of the moment irrespective of how it is consistent with other statements made elsewhere. Any coherent or rigorous doctrine is trashed in favour of sloppy cafeteria style chatter. It is no wonder many so called Catholics accept any heresy, the confusion caused by these evil tools of Satan is breathtaking, especially as they lie about dogmas and what the Church actually believes.
Also it is long past the time people realise that the Vatican II church and its minions embrace all religions and heresies and reserve the harshest condemnation and Church discipline only for traditional Catholics or those claiming to be Traditionalist. You make a good point that this is done because Satan knows that only Traditional Catholics holding to the dogmas of the Faith can be saved, and therefore every effort is made to persecute and slander those wanting to follow and defend the true Church. This latest scandal exposes just how wicked they are.

I couldn’t believe my ears the moment I heard him consider Gregory Palamas a “saint” under the excuse of “invincible ignorance”. Unbelievable. It would almost be akin to considering Martin Luther a “saint” based on the same faulty criteria. This is what happens to those obstinately defending the Vatican II Sect, they end up engaging in egregious mental gymnastics in order to defend a false council.

Pope Pius IX: Must Be Visibly United To Be In The Church
On the occasion of the convocation of the First Vatican Council, Pope Pius IX wrote to Protestants and other non-Catholics about the necessity for them to enter the Catholic Church. He taught that they are not in any way members or parts of the true Church of Christ because they are visibly separated from Catholic unity. This refutes two false positions: 1) the heretical teaching of Vatican II that such non-Catholics can be in the Church of Christ and even that Eastern schismatic churches are true particular churches – i.e. true local churches of the Church of Christ; and 2) the false idea that anyone can be saved without baptism. Pope Pius IX’s statement proves #2, that no one can be saved without baptism, because the only way to be visibly united to the Church (which he and other popes teach is required to be inside the Church) is by becoming a member of the Church through the Sacrament of Baptism.
Pope Pius IX, Iam Vos Omnes, To Protestants and Other Non-Catholics, Sept. 13, 1868: “Now, however, one who carefully considers and reflects on the condition in which the diverse and mutually disagreeing religious societies that are separated from the Catholic Church find themselves… should be able very easily to convince himself that no particular one of those societies or even all of them joined together in any way constitute and are that one and Catholic Church that Christ the Lord established, and willed to exist, nor can they in any way be said to be a member or part of the same Church (neque membrum aut partem eiusdem Ecclesiae ullo modo dici posse), because they are visibly separated from Catholic unity.” (Denzinger 43rd Edition, Ignatius Press, 2012, no. 2998)
