Jesus’ Words In John 4:22 Allude To Deuteronomy 13
In one of our recent videos called, Novus Ordo “Thomists” Fall Into The Pit Defending Islam’s False God, we showed that the true meaning of John 4:22 (where Jesus tells the Samaritan woman, “you worship what you do not know”) is that the Samaritans did not worship the true God but a false god. As St. Thomas said about John 4:22, “you do not adore God because you do not know Him”. Worship of a false god is described as worship of what one “does not know”. Well, the point we made in our video (against the defenders of Vatican II) is further powerfully confirmed by Deuteronomy 13, where God repeatedly describes false gods as those whom Israel did not know.
Deuteronomy 13:2: “… if he says, ‘Let us go after other gods,’ which you have not known, ‘and let us serve them,’ you shall not listen to the words of that prophet or that dreamer of dreams.”
Deuteronomy 13:6-8: “If your brother, the son of your mother, or your son or your daughter or the wife you embrace or your friend who is as your own soul entices you secretly, saying, ‘Let us go and serve other gods,’ which neither you nor your fathers have known, some of the gods of the peoples who are around you, whether near you or far off from you, from the one end of the earth to the other, you shall not yield to him or listen to him, nor shall your eye pity him, nor shall you spare him, nor shall you conceal him.”
Deuteronomy 13:13: “… certain worthless fellows have gone out among you and have drawn away the inhabitants of their city, saying, ‘Let us go and serve other gods,’ which you have not known…”
This sheds light on the reason Our Lord (in John 4:22) described the Samaritans’ false worship as worship of “what you do not know” (i.e. it was the worship of a false god).
