To seek praise from voluntary humiliations is not humility
Spirituality
âThere is, says the Holy Ghost, one that humbleth himself wickedly, and his interior is full of deceit (Ecclus. 19:23). There are some who humble themselves... through a motive of being esteemed humble and of being praised for their humility. But, according to St. Bernard, to seek praise from voluntary humiliations is not humility, but the destruction of humility, for it changes humility into an object of pride.â (St. Alphonsus)
Doctrine
St. Athanasius (4th century): âWhen He [Christ] extended his hands upon the cross, He overthrew âthe ruler of the power of the air, who is at work in the sons of disobedienceâ (Eph 2:2) and cleared the way to heaven for us.â
