The Shocking Effects Of The French Revolution
This is an interesting quote about the shocking effects of the French Revolution not long after 1789.
“For five weeks [in 1800] Spina travelled through the French countryside. For this Italian prelate the situation was shocking, the effects of the [French] Revolution plain. Priests were nowhere to be seen. Clergy were required to dress in normal clothes, which made them indistinguishable from the rest of the population. Many churches remained shut, with nobody to minister to local congregations. Several Catholic chapels and shrines had been rededicated to the republican cults of youth, womanhood, prosperity and old age. The republican calendar had abolished Sundays and the ten-day week seemed to take France away from Catholic rhythms of life. The archbishop felt as if he had entered a heathen land.” (Ambrogio A. Caiani, To Kidnap A Pope, Napoleon and Pius VII, pp. 70-71)
