Pope Pius VII Called Upon All The Bishops To Resign
In his document Tam Multa of Aug. 15, 1801, Pope Pius VII called upon all the bishops in France at the time to resign in order to finalize an agreement with Napoleon to normalize the Church in the aftermath of the French Revolution. Some refused to do so. Pius VII then suppressed all the existing dioceses of France and removed jurisdiction from the disobedient bishops. By the Bull Qui Christi Domini (November 29, 1801), “Pius VII suppressed all the ancient dioceses throughout the French Republic, and erected sixty new dioceses…” (Gabriel Van den Gheyn, The Catholic Encyclopedia, Vol. 6, “Ghent”, 1909)
