A Time For Action & A Time For Prayer/Retirement
In his commentary on Luke 5:16, St. Gregory the Theologian stated that Our Lord’s withdrawal to the wilderness in order to pray, after performing His works among the people, intended to teach us that there is a time for action and a time for prayer, contemplation and retirement.
St. Gregory Nazianzen, on Luke 5:16- “And His works He indeed performed among the people, but He prayed for the most part in the wilderness, sanctioning the liberty of resting a while from labor to hold converse with God with a pure heart. For He needed no change or retirement, since there was nothing which could be relaxed in Him, nor any place in which He might confine Himself, for He was God, but it was that we might clearly know that there is a time for action, a time for each higher occupation.”
Luke 5:15-16- “But now even more the report about him went abroad, and great crowds gathered to hear him and to be healed of their infirmities. But he would withdraw to the wilderness and pray.”
