Napoleon Threatened To Change The Religion Of Almost All Of Europe
During the negotiations between Napoleon and Pope Pius VII concerning the re-normalization of the Church in France after the French Revolution, Napoleon threatened a cardinal in this way:
“So, Monsieur Cardinal, you want a breach! I have no need of Rome. I will act alone. I have no need of the pope. If Henry VIII who barely had an eighth of my power could change the religion of his country and succeed in this endeavor, well I know how, and will be able to do the same. In changing the religion of France, I will change it in almost all of Europe, wherever the influence of my power extends. Rome will realize its loss, it will shed tears, but there will be no remedy.” (Ambrogio A. Caiani, To Kidnap A Pope, Napoleon and Pius VII, p. 93)
The arrogance of that man of dust (who was quite wicked at the time) is remarkable.
