Dutch Theologian: God Ordained The Requirement Of Explicit Faith In Christ
Fr. Martin Becanus was a Dutch theologian who died in 1624. He correctly taught that no adult could be saved without explicit faith in Christ, and that God ordained this to be the requirement.
Fr. Martin Becanus, Summa Theologiae Scholasticae, edition 1683, p. 467: “From these testimonies thus I conclude: No adult is able to be justified or attain the remission of sins without explicit faith in Christ. But faith in Christ consists chiefly in this, that you believe Christ to be true God and true man, who died for our salvation and rose again. This is the foundation of the whole Christian faith, without which in the New Testament no man can be justified. Not that it is necessary from the nature of the thing itself, but because God ordained it this way.”
