We will have to snoop on innocent people to stop terror, says former MI6 boss
express.co.uk Sir John Sawers compared his colleagues to a goalkeeper who would inevitable one day get beaten. He also called for more powers for the security services to intercept terrorist chatter on e-mail and the internet. Sir John, who stood down as chief of the Secret Intelligence Service last November, said there needs to be a "compact" between internet firms and the security services that strikes a balance between privacy and protecting society from terrorists. And he suggested that French magazine Charlie Hebdo had provoked Moslems with its controversial cartoons mocking the prophet Mohammed - though he stressed this did not justify the murderous response of Al Qaeda terrorists. Sir John's first speech since retiring came two weeks after the current MI5 head Andrew Parker warned that Britain "cannot hope to stop" every plot.
