Villages Evacuated After Mexico's Colima Volcano Erupts (Video)

Weather.com reports Mexico's 'Volcano of Fire' erupted to life Thursday and eruptions of fire and ash have been intensifying ever since. Now officials are evacuating residents around the volcano over fears of an even larger eruption. Residents of a dozen hamlets surrounding Colima volcano in Mexico's Jalisco and Colima states were evacuated Saturday after a plume of ash shot more than 1.5 miles into the sky. So far at least 70 people from these areas have checked into local shelters, the Associated Press reports. So much ash was ejected from the volcano that the local airport had to be closed and the hamlet of Yerbabuena, close to the volcano's base, was coated in a layer of ash 2 inches thick. A more than 7.5-mile area surrounding the volcano was shuttered over fears of a larger eruption, the BBC reports.
