University of Maryland offers $4,000 abortion training stipend funded by taxpayers

The University of Maryland-Baltimore (UMB) is offering medical students a $4,000 stipend for abortion training through a taxpayer-funded “Reproductive Health Fellowship.” The fellowship page advertises a six-week program for licensed clinicians to “gain in-depth knowledge and skills for medication abortion, patient counseling, and managing post-abortion care,” aided by “experienced faculty and leading professionals in the field,” plus post-program mentorships. The fellowship is offered through UMB’s “Maryland Abortion & Reproductive Clinical Health” (MARCH) Program, which is subsidized by state taxpayers through the Maryland Department of Health. Campus Reform notes that Maryland lawmakers passed the so-called “Abortion Care Access Act” in 2022 for the purpose of expanding abortion training, leading to a $10.6 million state grant in 2024 for the “Abortion Clinical Care Training Program.” For their investment, MARCH trained just 17 clinicians to completion in 2024, according to state records, with an additional 38 eligible applicants in 2025.
