Traffic pollution can cause 'facial dark spots'
autoblog.com
To the list of things that we know result from too much automotive exhaust, we can now add "facial dark spots." The technical term for these splotches, according to a report published today in the Journal of Investigative Dermatology, is lentigenes. You might know them as "liver spots." This is apparently the first time the effects of nitrogen dioxide (NO2), which comes "principally from motor vehicle exhaust and stationary sources such as electric utilities and industrial boilers," on skin has been investigated.
Researchers looked at about 1,500 women in Germany and China, and found that, "exposure to NO2 was significantly associated with more lentigenes on the cheeks in both German and Chinese women older than 50 years." These liver spots are "generally benign," the researchers now, but "some forms may be pre-cancerous."
Other studies have shown a connection between vehicle exhaust and asthma and lung cancer, and the California Air Resources Board has said that more than 9,000 Californians are killed each year from pollution spewed out by cars and trucks.
