Three Immersions Not Necessary For Baptism
In the early Church it was common for people to be baptized with a threefold immersion. That is a valid and ancient way of baptizing, but it’s not required for validity. In fact, since heretics in certain places in the early Church misrepresented the meaning of the threefold immersion, Pope St. Gregory the Great recommended the following at his time:
St. Gregory the Great, Book 1, Letter 43: “But, inasmuch as up to this time it has been the custom of heretics to immerse infants in baptism thrice, I am of opinion that this ought not to be done among you...”
