Texts Show Teachers Union Working With CDC Director To Keep Schools Closed
"A Virginia parents group revealed text exchanges between a teachers union president and the CDC director about COVID-19 school closure policy.
The texts that Fairfax County Parents Association obtained through a Freedom of Information request seemed to refute April congressional testimony by Randi Weingarten.
Randi Weingarten, president of the American Federation of Teachers, testified before a House committee she had not tried to influence policy to keep schools closed during the pandemic.
She claimed Republicans misrepresented her when they said she wanted to keep schools closed. A Twitter post from her was fact-checked by community notes, according to a PolitiFact report.
'Weingarten is misrepresenting her prior positions,' one note claimed. “She called attempts to reopen schools in the fall of 2020 ‘Reckless, callous, cruel.'”
Newly obtained text messages show the heads of both major teachers unions personally texting then-CDC Director Rochelle Walensky as the agency was putting together a scientific analysis of reopening schools during coronavirus — with the CDC making a key change that allowed schools to stay closed and appeased the unions."
