Police in New York have launched a manhunt after the violent attack as the 16-year-old was on her eight-minute walk to school. The assault, caught on a neighbour's CCTV camera, shows the victim walking down the street followed by the alleged culprit who is running. They are out of view for a few seconds obscured by a tree. The hooded man then reappears and sprints off in a hurry. The suspect left a Stanley knife at the scene, according to authorities. Police said the girl, a Chinese exchange student who moved to New York in August, had just stepped out of her front door when the man crept up to her. “He came out of nowhere. She was walking to school with a bookbag,” said NYPD Chief of Detectives Robert Boyce. “Once he slashed her, he ran off. … It’s very disturbing." The girl stumbled home drenched in blood and was rushed to hospital where she underwent surgery for gashes on her neck and cheek, police said.
