Oregon Democrats Vote For Infanticide, Block Bill To Care For Abortion Survivors
Oregon Democrats voted for infanticide Thursday by blocking a bill to care for babies who survive abortions.
They are refusing to guarantee them the same medical treatment given to any other newborn.
Senator Diane Linthicum, R-Beatty, made a motion today to bring House Bill 4087, the Born Alive Infants Protection Act, to the Senate floor before the end of the 2026 legislative session. Sen. Bruce Starr, R-Dundee, affirmed the motion.
All 34 Democrats voted against bringing the measure forward, while all 22 Republicans voted in favor, killing the bill.
Sens. Linthicum and David Brock Smith, R-Port Orford, argued in support on the floor, highlighting the story of Oregon abortion survivor Amy Miles, who was born alive at 28 weeks during a failed abortion attempt in the 1980s.
The legislation would not restrict abortion itself but would simply require doctors and hospitals to provide the same standards of care to infants born alive after an abortion as they would to any other newborn.
“The vast majority of voters agree that babies born alive during an attempted abortion should be treated with the same standards of care of any other newborn,” Oregon Right to Life noted.
The Senate action repeated a February House vote in which Democrats also blocked the identical bill on a 34-22 party-line vote.
“It is tragic that Oregon’s current Democratic lawmakers are so committed to their party’s radical abortion agenda that they will not, at the very minimum, take action to ensure that babies who survive abortion attempts are treated with the same standard of care as any other newborn,” Oregon Right to Life Executive Director Lois Anderson said...
Oregon remains one of the most radical states on abortion, allowing abortions up to the moment of birth for any reason. The repeated failure to pass basic protections for abortion survivors drew sharp criticism from pro-life advocates who say the Democratic majority has placed party ideology above the lives of the most vulnerable infants.
