II-II, Q. 161, A. 1, Reply to Obj. 2: â⌠humility, insofar as it is a virtue, conveys the notion of a praiseworthy self-abasement to the lowest place. Now this is sometimes done merely according to outward signs and pretense: wherefore this is a false humility, of which Augustine says in a letter (Epistle 149) that it is great pride, since it evidently seems to tend to the excellence of glory.â
