A disgruntled Ohio teen who doused his family's home with gasoline and lit it on fire in a bid to kill his parents for disciplining him over inappropriate Facebook posts will serve nine years in prison, a Butler County judge ruled Tuesday.
Mitchell Simon was a 16-year-old honors student when he tied his parents’ bedroom door shut inside their Liberty Township home, spilled gasoline in the hallway and set a blaze on Oct. 23, 2013. Perry Simon jumped from a second-floor window, breaking his ankle, while firefighters rescued Sharon Simon from the home, the Cincinnati Enquirer reported.
Both parents have supported the troubled teen, who at first pleaded insanity before pleading guilty to attempted aggravated murder and aggravated arson last week.
"I want to say that I love them dearly and I'm sorry for getting myself in this spot," Mitchell Simon said in court before his sentence was handed down, according to the Enquirer.
