Ludlow man indicted after beating dog nearly to death
cbs3springfield.com
A Ludlow man has been indicted on animal cruelty charges after he beat his 1-year-old dog nearly to death.
Ricardo Costa, 40, has been indicted on two charges. One for animal cruelty, and another for killing, maiming, or poisoning an animal, according to our media partner MassLive.
In February, Costa allegedly beat a 1-year-old Pomeranian named Scrunchy, and then left him to die in a snow bank, police said.
The dog suffered a fractured skull and other injuries, but has recovered and is now with a new owner.
When police arrived at Costa's Acorn Lane home in February, he admitted to hitting the dog with a pair of metal shears. Costa said he did it because the dog had gone to the bathroom inside the home.
He then led police to a parking lot near Red Bridge State Park where he dumped the dog's body. Police said the dog was still alive and was taken to Boston Road Animal Hospital in Springfield.
