Killer driver spared jail angers family with ‘great year’ Facebook message

metro.co.uk A careless driver who killed a man has angered his family by posting a ‘great year’ message on Facebook and then being spared jail. Sophie Gorton killed Allan Wellings last July but was told she would not go to jail after she showed remorse. But Allan’s family have questioned the sincerity of her apology after she posted the message, which could have been altered, on a Christmas Day ‘year in review’ post. The post included the stock phrase: ‘I’ve had a great year- thanks for being part of it.’ Mr Wellings’ widow Chelsea Gibson, 29, from Heywood, said: ‘We haven’t heard any remorse. She has never apologised to us face to face. ‘How can she say she is remorseful when you look at her Facebook and she’s going on about all the fantastic times she has had and “brilliant” trips to Helsinki and New York.’ Mr Wellings was killed on his motorbike when Gorton cut across him at a set of traffic lights.
