Jesus Raised Others When He Rose Again (Mt. 27:52; Hosea 6:2)
Mt. 27:52- “The tombs also were opened. And many bodies of the saints who had fallen asleep were raised…”
Based on Mt. 27:52 and Tradition, various fathers of the Church (e.g. St. Ignatius of Antioch, etc.) taught that when Jesus rose again – after He finished the Harrowing of Hell – He also raised Old Testament just men from the dead.
St. Ignatius of Antioch, Epistle To the Magnesians, Chap. 9: “And therefore He whom they [the prophets] rightly waited for, having come, raised them from the dead.”
Some fathers, such as St. Cyril of Jerusalem, specifically applied the prophecy of Hosea 6:2 to that Resurrection. Hosea 6:2 appears to be the Old Testament verse St. Paul has in mind when he writes about the Resurrection in 1 Cor. 15:4.
Hosea 6:2- “After two days he will revive us; on the third day he will raise us up, that we may live before him.”
St. Cyril of Jerusalem, Catechetical Lecture XIV (4th cent.): “… the Savior, who not only rose from the dead, but also raised the dead with Himself. And in the person of these the Prophet Hosea [Osee] says plainly: After two days He will revive us, and on the third day we shall rise again, and shall live in His sight.”
Our video called Jesus’ Descent Into Hell & The Baptism Of The Good Thief discusses ancient Church writers who believed that the Old Testament just men were baptized. The Resurrection of Old Testament just men at the time of Our Lord’s Resurrection is consistent with the idea that they were baptized; for if Jesus told His Apostles to preach the Gospel to every creature and baptize them (Mt. 28:19), it makes sense that they also would have been baptized after He preached the Gospel to them in Hades and raised them from the dead.
