Israeli Government Accused Of "Outright Racism"

Opposition politicians are calling out the Israeli government for “outright racism” after a Kenyan immigrant who claimed to be a Jewish convert was deported.

Members of the Knesset belonging to the Conservative Movement and the Zionist Union called a committee meeting to discuss the Population, Immigration, and Border Authority’s handling of Yehudah Kimani, a Jewish leader from Kenya. They accused the agency of acting on a “pattern of discrimination toward Jews from isolated and emerging communities around the world who are not associated with the Orthodox movement.”

Kimani addressed Wednesday’s hearing via a pre-recorded video message in which he detailed his two applications for a tourist visa, and his subsequent rejection upon landing at Ben Gurion Airport on Dec. 19. He was immediately deported, a process he said made him feel “less than human.” At one point during the hearing, he was referred to as “just a goy from Kenya,” a derogative statement that implied he wasn’t really Jewish.
