Georgia man receives life sentence in death of boy he forced to hold paint buckets on a hot day
washingtonpost.com The punishment came after 12-year-old Jay’tavious Mahone took his shoes off after being told not to, investigators said. Mahone was forced by Omar Pitts, his sister’s boyfriend, to stand outside in Georgia’s summer heat and hold paint buckets for hours, according to the Fulton County District Attorney’s Office in Georgia. Mahone eventually collapsed and then Pitts “repeatedly kicked the boy throughout his body.” Mahone later died from blunt force trauma to the head, according to a medical examiner. Pitts, 32, pleaded guilty Thursday to murder, cruelty to children and other charges in Mahone’s 2010 death in College Park, Ga., the district attorney’s office announced. A judge sentenced Pitts, who had been facing the death penalty, to life in prison plus an additional 50 years.
