As being of partial Jewish descent himself, Scharfenberger has been particularly active in Jewish-Catholic dialogue. On March 8, 2016 he spoke at an interfaith event saying 'Christians cannot be anti-Semitic and be Christian.'[9] In July 2019 Scharfenberger was appointed by Pope Francis as consultor to the Pontifical Commission for Religious Relations with the Jews.[10]
On October 18, 2018 Scharfenberger celebrated the feast day of Our Lady of Walsingham together with dean Leander Harding at the Episcopal Cathedral of All Saints, in a celebration that is observed both by Catholics and Anglicans. Afterwards Scharfenberger told the Episcopalian congregation that there was more similar between the two faiths than differences.[11] ...
Personal life
Aside from English, Scharfenberger is a polyglot who fluent Italian, Spanish and German, he speaks enough Polish to celebrate mass, and knows a bit of Hebrew, Russian and Portuguese as well.[12] He is the oldest of five children of Edward Scharfenberger Sr. and Elaine Magdal. Sharfenberger has German ancestry on his father's side has Jewish ancestry on his mother's side of the family, with his maternal grandmother being a Russian Jew."
