Eastern "Orthodox" Lies & A Powerful Quote From Bellarmine
This is a good quote from St. Robert Bellarmine that we cited in our video called The Real History Of “Orthodoxy”: Playlist That Refutes Eastern "Orthodoxy" In it St. Robert Bellarmine correctly stated that God allowed Constantinople to fall on the feast of the Holy Spirit precisely to signify that the Greeks’ (i.e. the Eastern schismatics’) rebellion against the truth was the reason for their destruction.
St. Robert Bellarmine, De Christo, Book 2, Chap. 30: “… in order that they [the Greeks] would understand that the reason for their destruction was pertinacity in error concerning the procession of the Holy Spirit, on the very feast days themselves of the Holy Spirit Constantinople was captured by the Turks, the emperor was killed, and the empire was entirely extinguished... Therefore many compare the Greek Church to the Kingdom of Samaria, which separated itself from the true temple, and in the end was led away into perpetual captivity.”
However, in a fallacious and dishonest attempt to respond to the point we made about this incident in a previous video, a certain Eastern schismatic badly misrepresented our statement and attacked a strawman. He falsely claimed that we argued in our video on councils that Constantinople fell in 1453 because the Florentine Union was not enforced, as if we held that there was no effort by the leaders in Constantinople at the time to officially enforce the Florentine Union. But we said no such thing. He misrepresented our argument. In fact, our video on councils specifically mentioned that the Florentine Union was officially proclaimed in the main church in Constantinople on Dec. 12, 1452. Rather, the point we very clearly made is that DESPITE THE UNION having been officially proclaimed in Constantinople, many of THE PEOPLE IN GENERAL REMAINED OPPOSED TO IT.
At times the opposition was so severe that the ecclesiastical authorities in favor of the union had to leave the main church in Constantinople. The people were widely of the sentiment that “it’s better to die than to Latinize.” As a consequence of such widespread resistance to the Florentine Union and Constantinople’s history of rebellion against the Papacy and the Filioque, God allowed the city to fall on Pentecost (the feast of the Holy Spirit). An important analogy can be drawn here to Joshua 7, in which we read that Israel suffered a humiliating defeat because one man (who was not the leader) gravely disobeyed God. How much more, then, would long-term and widespread rebellion by the people in Constantinople be grounds for God to allow their destruction on a date that obviously signified His displeasure with their rejection of the truth about the Holy Spirit?
Since the Eastern schismatic could not refute the point and the powerful fact that convicts them of their heresy, he instead misrepresented our argument and attacked a strawman in the manner described above. That’s typical of liars and dishonest heretics. The same individual is actually an inveterate liar who misrepresents many things and spreads many other falsehoods. His positions (like those of other supporters of Eastern "Orthodoxy") are thoroughly refuted in our playlist on Eastern "Orthodoxy". However, God willing, we plan to post some additional points that will further expose how such individuals use false claims and misrepresentations to deceive and mislead.
