Donald Trump will have just 10 minutes to react if North Korea fires nuclear missile

Scientists insist North Korea is not yet fully capable of launching a missile that could successfully travel the 5,500 mile distance, but the hermit kingdom’s nuclear development programme is coming along much faster than was previously anticipated.
But if North Korea continues to develop its nuclear missile technology US President Donald Trump could be given just 10 minutes to decide whether he should launch a retaliatory strike, according to experts.
North Korea has made no secret of its work to develop a nuclear-tipped missile capable of striking the US and has ignored calls to halt its nuclear and missile programmes in defiance of UN sanctions.
Kim Jong-un's state-run KCNA news service alleges Pyongyang now has the ability to send a “large-size heavy nuclear warhead” across the Pacific following testing of a Hwasong-12 missile over the weekend.
The Hwasong-12 was fired on Sunday night, soaring 489 miles and reaching a height of 1,312 miles.
Sunday's missile was deliberately fired at the highest angle to avoid affecting neighbouring countries' security.
However, had it been launched at a standard trajectory, it would have reached at least 2,500 miles - almost half the distance required to reach the US mainland.
The test has prompted leading scientists David Wright, of the UCS Global Security Program, and rocket analyst Markus Schiller, of ST Analytics in Germany, to analyse what would happen should North Korea fire a long-range strike.
Mr Wright said: “The timelines are short.
“Even for long-range missiles, there are a lot of steps that go into detecting the launch and figuring out what it is, leaving the president with maybe 10 minutes to decide whether to launch a retaliatory strike.”
