Bellarmine Says King Solomon Was Damned
St. Robert Bellarmine gives King Solomon as a clear biblical example of someone who was at one time justified but, as a result of grave sins, lost justification. He also considers Solomon to have been damned.
St. Robert Bellarmine, De Iustificatione, Book 3, Chap. 14: “… [King] Solomon was at one time truly just, and singularly loved by God. In 2 Samuel 7 God says concerning him: I will be to him as a Father, and he will be to me as a son… But Scripture testifies this man to have fallen from grace and justice in old age. It reports him to have most disgracefully worshipped even the idols of all his concubines. St. Cyprian indicates (in book 1, epistle 5) that the same Solomon was clearly reprobate and damned. And after him St. Augustine [indicates the same] in book 22, Contra Faustum, chap. 88.”
