Man claims he is sorry for "terminating" dog with a shovel as punishment for chewing patio furniture

A Texas man charged with a felony animal cruelty charge for beating his female pit bull to death with a shovel had his bail upped higher this week.
59-year-old Robert Prichard had his bail changed to $50,000 by a Dallas County judge. He is accused of beating his dog to death with a shovel as punishment for her chewing on patio furniture in late August, according to the Dallas Observer.
In an interview with KRLD, Prichard says he made a mistake.
“I regret terminating that dog,” he told reporter L.P. Phillips. “I should have just unleashed it inside its doghouse and waited for my next check.”
“I apologize to my neighbors. I’m sorry I made that initial wrong decision cause I thought I had no other choice,” he added.
The Observer notes this stands in stark contrast to what he told police in August when he reportedly said he’d thrown the beaten dog into the pool to “cool her off.”
The Observer also says his recent interview “is less of an apology than an explanation of why he killed his dog.”
