U.S. politician warns "Bible ban" bill part of Canada’s assault on religious freedom
An American senator visiting Canada warned that Canadians’ freedoms are under attack because of the Liberal government’s Bill C-9, or “Bible ban” bill, saying that a “free” nation does not make its pastors “edit the Gospel to satisfy the state.”
In a letter dated October 2 and posted on social media by former MP Stockwell Day, Oklahoma state Senator Shane Jett issued the warning ahead of a trip to Canada to speak at a religious conference.
“A nation confident in its liberties does not fear the Scriptures that helped form it,” Jett wrote in his letter addressed to Canadian MPs.
“I will continue to encourage my colleagues in Oklahoma, and friends across the United States, to stand with Canadians who wish to worship, preach, and raise their children without fear of legal penalty for holding the faith of their fathers.”...
“Parliament has narrowed the legal space in which clergy and lay believers may teach what Scripture has always taught on marriage, sexuality, and the created order,” he said.
“When a minister of the Crown can cite Leviticus, Deuteronomy, and Romans as passages that ought not to enjoy a religious defense, people of faith reasonably conclude that the Bible itself is being placed under suspicion. A free country does not require its pastors to edit the Gospel to satisfy the state.”...
In June, a majority of MPs passed Bill C-9. As reported by LifeSiteNews, a final attempt to stop the bill was defeated, meaning that the bill, which threatens to criminalize quoting parts of the Bible, including on homosexuality, has officially passed Canada’s Parliament and is law.
Constitutional experts have blasted the bill, saying it will allow empowered police and the government to go after those deemed to have violated a person’s “feelings” in a “hateful” way. The bill was introduced by Liberal Party Justice Minister Sean Fraser last year.
The Conservative Party opposed it, calling its passage a “Dark Day” for Canada.
