Actress says she’s disappointed her son didn’t turn out to be gay
On September 26, actress Camryn Manheim took to the stage at the Human Rights Campaign National Dinner in Washington, D.C. and announced that she desperately wished her son was gay — and that she was wildly disappointed that he had turned out to be heterosexual.
Over the past few years, Hollywood figures have responded angrily to the suggestion that having children who identify as LGBT has become “trendy” in the entertainment industry — an observation that has been made not only by social conservatives but celebrities such as Bill Maher, Jennifer Stalone, and KISS member Paul Stanley.
Celebrities with children who identify as transgender or gender-questioning include Robert DeNiro, Jamie Lee Curtis, Cher, Cynthia Nixon, Dwayne Wade and Gabrielle Union, Charlize Theron, Liv Schreiber and Naomi Watts, Marlon Wayans, Khary Payton, and Dean McDermott. And that’s a very partial list — most of these parents have discussed their children publicly and to great fanfare from Tinseltown.
Back to Camryn Manheim’s bizarre speech for the HRC (America’s most powerful LGBT lobby group). Manheim, who starred in the drama series “The Practice,” was introducing fellow actress Marcia Gay Harden and presenting her with the Ally for Equality Award.
“For Marcia, of course, this (award) is deeply personal to her,” Manheim said. “She has three remarkable children who all align with the LGBTQ+ community, which is another thing that deeply irritates me about her, because I always wanted a gay son. I love that relationship between gay sons and their mothers."
