Christ The King, Quas Primas, & Baptism
Oct. 26 is the feast of Christ the King. In his 1925 encyclical Quas Primas Pope Pius XI established the feast. In that encyclical to the universal Church the pope also affirmed the Church’s true teaching on baptism. He taught that no one can enter the Kingdom of God without faith and baptism (identifying baptism as “an external rite” – i.e. the Sacrament). That’s another example of how the true position on baptism – that no one can be inside the Church or saved without the Sacrament of Baptism (John 3:5, etc.) – continued to be affirmed in the official teaching of the popes and the Magisterium in the decades before Vatican II.
Pope Pius XI, Quas Primas (#15), Dec. 11, 1925, addressed to the universal Church, concerning entrance into the Kingdom of God: “Which Kingdom indeed is set forth in the Gospels as one into which men prepare to enter by doing penance but are unable to enter except through faith and baptism, which, although it is an external rite, nevertheless signifies and effects an interior regeneration.”
In Quas Primas Pope Pius XI also affirmed the Acts 4:12 dogma, which teaches that no one can be saved without faith in Jesus Christ.
Pope Pius XI, Quas Primas (#18), Dec. 11, 1925: “In him is the salvation of the individual, in him is the salvation of society. ‘Neither is there salvation in any other, for there is no other name under heaven given to men whereby we must be saved’ (Acts 4:12).”
