Bellarmine On The Cessation Of The Mosaic Law
Bellarmine On The Cessation Of The Mosaic Law
St. Robert Bellarmine, De Romano Pontifice, Book 4, Chap. 18: “Christ wanted us to be free from the ceremonies and judicial precepts of Moses because those ceremonies were figures of the New Testament; and therefore, with the reality present, they should cease. Likewise, the judicial precepts pertained to the government of the people of God according to that state. Therefore, with that state having changed, it was also necessary for the precepts themselves to change. For with the translation of the priesthood, the Apostle says in Hebrews 7, it is necessary that there is a translation of the law. But it does not follow that we should not have any political or ecclesiastical laws, if we should not have those of Moses.”
