In January 1591 Pope Gregory XIV “renewed all former decrees against [then Calvinist] Henry of Navarre as a relapsed heretic, who because of that status had lost his right of succession to the French throne, and told the French bishops they must withdraw all support from Henry within fifteen days or be excommunicated and lose their dioceses.” (Warren H. Carroll, The Cleaving Of Christendom, p. 443)
