Numbers 20 – Moses Disobeyed God By Striking The Rock Twice Instead Of Speaking To It
Near the end of their 40 years of wandering in the wilderness, the Israelites came to a place called Sin. They complained bitterly to Moses and Aaron that there was no water.
Numbers 20:2-5 “And the people wanting water, came together against Moses and Aaron: And making a sedition, they said: Would God we had perished among our brethren before the Lord. Why have you brought out the church of the Lord into the wilderness, that both we and our cattle should die? Why have you made us come up out of Egypt, and have brought us into this wretched place which cannot be sowed, nor bringeth forth figs, nor vines, nor pomegranates, neither is there any water to drink?”
Moses and Aaron went to the Lord, and He said:
Numbers 20:7-12 “And the Lord spoke to Moses, saying: Take the rod, and assemble the people together, thou and Aaron thy brother, and speak to the rock before them, and it shall yield waters. And when thou hast brought forth water out of the rock, all the multitude and their cattle shall drink. Moses therefore took the rod, which was before the Lord, as he had commanded him, and having gathered together the multitude before the rock, he said to them: Hear, ye rebellious and incredulous: Can we bring you forth water out of this rock? And when Moses had lifted up his hand, and struck the rock twice with the rod, there came forth water in great abundance, so that the people and their cattle drank, and the Lord said to Moses and Aaron: Because you have not believed me, to sanctify me before the children of Israel, you shall not bring these people into the land, which I will give them.”
Notice that God commanded them to “speak” to the rock. Instead, Moses struck the rock twice – an act of disobedience that the Lord connected to a lack of faith or confidence in Him. After this incident, God told Moses to strip Aaron of the priestly vestments and put them on Aaron’s son. Moses did as God commanded, and Aaron died.
In Deuteronomy 32, God also mentions this incident.
Deuteronomy 32:51-52 “Because you trespassed against me in the midst of the children of Israel, at the waters of contradiction in Cades of the desert of Sin: and you did not sanctify me among the children of Israel. Thou shalt see the land before thee, which I will give to the children of Israel, but thou shalt not enter into it.”
Despite his fault on this occasion, Moses continued to lead the people of God until his death, even though he didn’t enter the Promised Land. He also appeared with Our Lord and Elijah just before the Transfiguration (Mt. 17).
