St. Gregory Nazianzen on Arius and the little flock
St. Gregory Nazianzen, Carmen De Vita Sua, AD 382: “… Alexandria, that vain city, filled with every wickedness, irrational in its recklessness, sent forth Arius, that abomination of the desert. He was the first to say: ‘The Trinity should not be worshipped’, imposing different degrees of honor on the one nature… although this city was in a most wretched state… there were a few souls perfect in the word of faith, just a small congregation, it is true, but larger in God’s eyes (for He counts not the number but the hearts)...” (Gregory Nazianzus, Autobiographical Poems, edited and translated by C.
