Graysi Fernanda, 15, was enjoying her birthday when she turned into a flaming torch at her celebratory party.
She suffered second and third degree burns over much of her body after she was completely engulfed in flames and ran screaming through the room.
The tragedy happened as she was coming down the stairs in her princess-style birthday dress as fireworks were set off to herald her grand entrance.
One of the fireworks spewed sparks which fell on the elaborate, ruffled dress which to the horror of those watching went up in flames.
The incident happened at the girl's home in the district of El Agustino in Lima, the capital of Peru.
The birthday girl was taken to the nearby Hospital del Nino de San Borja where she will need extensive re-constructive surgery if she survives.
